Swansea Council Press Release - 29 July 2003

CONTRACTOR APPOINTED TO BUILD MAJOR SPORTS STADIUM

A WORLD class contractor has been appointed to build the new 20,000-all seater sports stadium for Swansea.

Interserve, which has strong links with Swansea, is expected to begin work on the new £24 million stadium at Morfa in the autumn.

The company was chosen during a special meeting of Swansea Council's Cabinet today (TUE).

Interserve is currently constructing Technium II in the city's SA1 Swansea Waterfront development.

The new stadium will be the home for Swansea City FC and the new regional rugby team, Neath-Swansea Ospreys. It will also host national and international sports events and major music concerts.

Lawrence Bailey, Swansea Council Leader, said, "I am delighted that a world-class contractor has been appointed to build the stadium.

"Interserve has a very strong track record in delivering major projects.

"The contractors will begin the construction of the stadium in the autumn which clearly demonstrates to the people of Swansea and Wales that this fantastic stadium is no longer a dream, it is now a reality."

The stadium is expected to be completed for the opening of the 2005 season.

Meanwhile, a major commercial development near the stadium is about to get under way.
Capital and Regional plc is developing a retail centre at Morfa. Its contractors are expected on site within the next few weeks.

The revenue from the sale of the land to Capital and Regional has been used by the Council to help build the stadium.
