MORFA STADIUM

Swansea Council Press Release - 13 March 2003

MORFA STADIUM

Swansea Council is seeking a leading contractor to build the Morfa Stadium in a proposed deal to provide a 21st century home for sport in the city.

In a revised deal designed to ensure best value and speed up progress and development of the stadium, Miller and Capital & Regional will carry out the development of the retail and leisure park in order to generate revenue for the council to undertake the procurement of the stadium directly.

Adverts will be placed in relevant journals during the next few days inviting nationally recognised contractors with a proven track record in stadium construction to tender for the contract.

The proposal was supported by Swansea Council’s cabinet during a meeting on Thursday morning when a deadline of 6 June 2003 was set for the revised arrangements to be finalised.

A spokesman for Swansea Council said, "We are confident that this new deal will help progress plans to build an all-seater stadium in Swansea. The new arrangements set a clear deadline for a final agreement in be in place and passes control of the stadium construction to the council.

"All parties will be working towards meeting that deadline and delivering a stadium that both Swansea and Wales can be proud of."

Phil Miller, Managing Director of Miller Developments, and Andy Lewis-Pratt, main Board Director of C&R plc have said, "We are delighted to confirm this new agreement, which we are confident will help to deliver Morfa Stadium. We are working to meet the deadline set by the council so we can make available the resources which would enable the stadium to be constructed as early as possible."
